Tell me about my Diagnostic

A diagnostic service uses advanced scan tools and mechanical testing to identify faults in your vehicle’s engine, transmission, electrical, or emissions systems. If a warning light is on, your car is running poorly, or you want peace of mind before a repair, a diagnostic test pinpoints the cause of the problem quickly and accurately.

What is a vehicle diagnostic?

A diagnostic is a professional inspection that involves connecting a scan tool to your car’s onboard computer (ECU) to read error codes, combined with visual and mechanical checks. It helps identify problems such as misfires, electrical faults, or failing components without guesswork.

Why do you need a diagnostic?

Modern vehicles are complex, with computer-controlled systems. A diagnostic saves time and money by locating the exact issue instead of replacing parts unnecessarily. It also ensures hidden problems are identified before they become costly repairs.

Common reasons for booking a diagnostic

  • Check Engine or Service Engine Soon light is on
  • Warning lights for ABS, airbags, or transmission
  • Car stalling, rough idling, or poor acceleration
  • Electrical systems not working properly
  • Excessive exhaust smoke or unusual noises
  • Poor fuel economy

What happens during a diagnostic?

A mechanic will:

  1. Connect a scan tool to read ECU error codes
  2. Interpret codes to identify faulty systems or sensors
  3. Inspect key components (battery, ignition, fuel, exhaust)
  4. Test drive the vehicle if needed to replicate symptoms
  5. Check wiring, connectors, and control modules
  6. Provide a detailed report and recommended repairs

How much does a diagnostic cost?

A standard diagnostic test typically costs $100–$180. More complex fault tracing involving multiple systems may cost $200–$400+, depending on labour time required.

Is it unsafe to ignore a diagnostic?

Yes. If a warning light is on or your car is running poorly, ignoring the issue can lead to breakdowns, higher emissions, or major engine or transmission damage. A diagnostic ensures problems are caught and repaired early for safe and reliable driving.
