Tell me about my Wipers do not shut off assessment

If your wipers do not shut off, it usually means there’s an electrical or mechanical fault in the wiper system. While the wipers may still clear your windshield, continuous operation can be distracting, wear out the blades quickly, and damage the motor if left unchecked.

What does it mean if the wipers won’t turn off?

This indicates that power is still being sent to the wiper motor even after the switch is turned off. The cause is often a faulty wiper switch, relay, or control module, but can also be due to wiring issues.

Common causes of wipers not shutting off

  • Faulty wiper switch or stalk
  • Stuck or defective wiper relay
  • Malfunctioning wiper control module
  • Electrical short or wiring fault
  • Rarely, a stuck wiper motor

Why do you need to fix this problem quickly?

Constantly running wipers cause unnecessary wear, can damage the blades, and may eventually burn out the wiper motor. It’s also inconvenient and can reduce concentration while driving.

How do you know when to get it checked?

You should book an inspection if:

  • Your wipers continue to run after the switch is turned off
  • The wipers only stop when the ignition is turned off
  • The wipers are stuck on one speed or mode
  • Other electrical issues occur alongside the problem

What happens during an assessment?

A mechanic will:

  1. Test the wiper switch and stalk for faults
  2. Inspect the wiper relay and control module
  3. Check wiring and electrical connections for shorts
  4. Test the wiper motor for correct shutoff function
  5. Advise on replacing the faulty switch, relay, or module

How much does it cost to fix?

Wiper relay replacement typically costs $100–$200. A faulty switch may cost $150–$300 to replace. If the control module is at fault, repairs can range from $300–$600+ depending on the vehicle.

Is it unsafe to drive with wipers that won’t turn off?

Not immediately unsafe, but it can be distracting, reduce visibility if the screen is dry, and cause premature wear to the wipers and motor. The issue should be repaired promptly to avoid further damage.
