Tell me about my Windshield washer system failure assessment

If your windshield washer system has failed, it means the nozzles, pump, or hoses are not delivering fluid to the windshield. This can severely reduce visibility, especially in wet or dirty conditions, and create a safety hazard. Since clear vision is critical for safe driving, washer system faults should be repaired promptly.

What does it mean if the windshield washer system fails?

This means the system that sprays washer fluid onto your windshield is not functioning correctly. It could be an electrical issue, a mechanical fault, or simply a blockage preventing fluid from reaching the glass.

Common causes of windshield washer system failure

  • Empty washer fluid reservoir
  • Faulty or failed washer pump
  • Blocked or clogged spray nozzles
  • Damaged or disconnected hoses
  • Blown fuse or wiring problem in the washer system
  • Frozen washer fluid in cold weather

Why do you need to fix this problem quickly?

Without washer fluid, dirt, dust, salt, and road grime build up on the windshield, reducing visibility and increasing the risk of accidents. A working washer system is also required for WOF/roadworthiness inspections.

How do you know when to get it checked?

You should book an inspection if:

  • No washer fluid sprays when you activate the system
  • You hear the pump motor running but no fluid comes out
  • Only one side sprays or the spray is weak
  • The washer fuse keeps blowing

What happens during an assessment?

A mechanic will:

  1. Check the washer fluid level and condition
  2. Test the washer pump for power and function
  3. Inspect hoses and connections for leaks or blockages
  4. Clean or replace clogged spray nozzles
  5. Check fuses and wiring if the pump does not run

How much does it cost to fix?

Costs depend on the issue. Clearing nozzles or topping up fluid may cost $50–$100. Washer pump replacement typically costs $180–$350. Hose or electrical repairs may range from $150–$400+.

Is it unsafe to drive with a failed washer system?

Yes. Without a functioning washer system, your ability to keep the windshield clear is compromised, which is a major safety risk. It should be repaired promptly to maintain safe driving visibility.
