Tell me about my Windshield wiper failure assessment

If your windshield wipers fail, you lose the ability to clear rain, snow, or dirt from the glass, which is a serious safety hazard. Wiper failure can be caused by worn blades, a faulty motor, electrical issues, or linkage problems. Since wipers are essential for safe visibility, the issue should be addressed immediately.

What does it mean if the windshield wipers fail?

This means the wipers are not moving, not clearing properly, or have stopped working altogether. The fault could be mechanical (blades or linkages) or electrical (motor, switch, or wiring).

Common causes of windshield wiper failure

  • Worn or torn wiper blades
  • Failed wiper motor
  • Broken or loose wiper linkage
  • Blown fuse or wiring problem in the wiper circuit
  • Faulty wiper switch or control module

Why do you need to fix this problem quickly?

Without working wipers, your vision can be completely blocked during rain or poor conditions, making driving unsafe. Wiper failure will also cause your car to fail a WOF/roadworthiness inspection.

How do you know when to get it checked?

You should book an inspection if:

  • The wipers do not move when switched on
  • They move slowly, erratically, or stop mid-wipe
  • You hear the motor running but the wipers don’t move
  • The wipers streak, skip, or leave uncleared areas even with new blades

What happens during an assessment?

A mechanic will:

  1. Check the condition of the wiper blades
  2. Inspect the wiper motor, fuses, and wiring
  3. Test the wiper switch and control system
  4. Examine the wiper linkage and arms for wear or looseness
  5. Advise on replacing faulty blades, motor, or linkages

How much does it cost to fix?

New wiper blades typically cost $40–$80 fitted. Wiper motor replacement costs $300–$600. Repairs to linkages or switches may range from $150–$400+ depending on the issue.

Is it unsafe to drive with failed wipers?

Yes. Driving without functioning wipers is extremely dangerous as it reduces or eliminates visibility in bad weather. If your wipers fail, the vehicle should not be driven until repaired.
