Tell me about my Clutch is not working assessment

If your clutch is not working, it means you can’t properly disengage or engage the clutch, making it difficult or impossible to change gears. This can happen suddenly or develop gradually, and is usually caused by hydraulic failures, stretched or broken cables, or severe wear of clutch components. A non-functioning clutch makes the vehicle undriveable and should be repaired immediately.

What does it mean if the clutch is not working?

A non-working clutch means that pressing the pedal doesn’t separate the clutch disc from the flywheel, so the transmission input shaft keeps spinning. This prevents smooth gear changes and may stop the car from moving at all.

Common causes of a clutch not working

  • Broken or stretched clutch cable
  • Low, contaminated, or leaking clutch fluid (hydraulic systems)
  • Faulty clutch master or slave cylinder
  • Worn or broken clutch disc, pressure plate, or release bearing
  • Air trapped in the hydraulic line
  • Clutch linkage failure

Why do you need to fix this problem quickly?

Without a working clutch, you cannot shift gears safely or drive the car. Continuing to force gear changes can cause severe transmission damage and increase repair costs.

How do you know when to get it checked?

Signs your clutch isn’t working include:

  • Clutch pedal sinks to the floor or feels unresponsive
  • Unable to shift into first or reverse gear
  • Grinding noise when attempting to change gears
  • Car won’t move even when in gear
  • Clutch pedal feels loose, spongy, or stuck

What happens during an assessment?

A mechanic will:

  1. Check clutch pedal movement and free play
  2. Inspect clutch cable or hydraulic system (master/slave cylinders, fluid condition, and leaks)
  3. Test for air in the hydraulic lines and bleed if required
  4. Check clutch disc, pressure plate, and release bearing for wear
  5. Inspect linkage and mounting components
  6. Advise whether an adjustment, repair, or full clutch replacement is needed

How much does it cost to fix?

Minor fixes such as adjusting or bleeding the system may cost $120–$250. Clutch cable or hydraulic cylinder replacement typically costs $300–$700. A full clutch kit replacement, including the disc, pressure plate, and bearing, usually ranges from $900–$2,000+, depending on the vehicle.

Is it unsafe to drive with a clutch that’s not working?

Yes. A non-functioning clutch makes it nearly impossible to control the car safely. Attempting to drive can damage
