Tell me about my Cupping on tyres assessment
If you notice cupping or scalloping on your tyres, it means the tread is wearing unevenly, creating high and low spots across the tyre surface. This usually points to suspension, alignment, or balance issues. Cupped tyres reduce grip, create road noise, and shorten tyre life, so the problem should be inspected quickly.
What does it mean if tyres are cupping?
Cupping occurs when the tyre bounces slightly while rotating instead of maintaining smooth, consistent contact with the road. This irregular contact wears small dips or scallops into the tread, leading to noise, vibration, and reduced safety.
Common causes of tyre cupping
- Worn or damaged suspension components (shocks, struts, bushings)
- Poor wheel alignment
- Unbalanced wheels or tyres
- Over- or under-inflated tyres
- Loose steering components
- Low-quality or overly worn tyres
Why do you need to fix this problem quickly?
Cupped tyres wear out much faster than normal and compromise handling, braking performance, and ride comfort. Ignoring the issue can damage suspension further and force premature tyre replacement.
How do you know when to get it checked?
You should book an inspection if you notice:
- Uneven tyre tread with dips or scalloped edges
- Loud humming, roaring, or droning noises at speed
- Vibration through the steering wheel or body of the car
- Tyres wearing out unusually quickly
What happens during an assessment?
A mechanic will:
- Inspect tyre tread for cupping or uneven wear
- Check suspension components for wear or leaks
- Test wheel alignment and balance
- Inspect steering linkage and bushings
- Measure tyre pressure and adjust if needed
- Recommend tyre replacement if the damage is severe
How much does it cost to fix?
Wheel balancing or alignment typically costs $100–$250. Replacing worn suspension components such as shocks or struts may cost $400–$1,200+. New tyres may add $150–$400 each, depending on size and brand.
Is it unsafe to drive with cupped tyres?
Yes. Cupped tyres reduce traction, especially in wet conditions, and increase the risk of blowouts. They should be inspected and replaced if severely worn, and the underlying cause must be repaired to prevent recurrence.
