Tell me about my Headlights are dim or dull assessment
If your headlights appear dim or dull, it reduces your visibility at night and makes it harder for other drivers to see you. This issue may be caused by worn bulbs, cloudy headlight lenses, poor electrical connections, or charging system problems. An inspection will identify the cause and restore proper brightness for safe driving.
What does it mean if headlights are dim or dull?
Dim headlights usually mean the bulbs are nearing the end of their life, the lenses are oxidised, or there is insufficient power reaching the lights due to wiring or alternator issues.
Common causes of dim or dull headlights
- Old or worn-out headlight bulbs
- Cloudy, yellowed, or oxidised headlight lenses
- Corroded or loose electrical connections
- Weak alternator or low battery voltage
- Faulty headlight switch or wiring
Why do you need to fix this problem quickly?
Dim headlights reduce your ability to see hazards and make your car less visible to others, especially at night or in poor weather. This increases the risk of accidents and may result in a failed WOF or safety inspection.
How do you know when to get it checked?
You should book an inspection if:
- Headlights appear noticeably dimmer than usual
- One headlight is dimmer than the other
- The beams flicker or change brightness
- You’ve replaced bulbs but the issue persists
- Other electrical issues occur, such as weak interior lights
What happens during an assessment?
A mechanic will:
- Inspect the headlight bulbs for wear or damage
- Check the lenses for oxidation or cloudiness
- Test the battery and alternator output
- Inspect wiring, connectors, and the headlight switch
- Recommend bulb replacement, headlight restoration, or electrical repair as needed
How much does it cost to fix?
Replacing bulbs typically costs $50–$120. Headlight restoration ranges from $120–$250. Electrical or alternator repairs may cost $200–$800+ depending on the fault.
Is it unsafe to drive with dim headlights?
Yes. Dim headlights reduce visibility by a large margin, especially in dark or wet conditions. This makes driving more dangerous and should be fixed promptly to ensure safety and compliance with road laws.
