Tell me about my Parking / emergency brake does not work assessment
If your parking brake (also known as the emergency brake or handbrake) does not work, it means your car may roll when parked on an incline. The parking brake is an essential safety feature that keeps your car stationary when parked and provides backup stopping power in emergencies. A non-functioning handbrake should be inspected and repaired immediately.
What does it mean if the parking brake does not work?
This usually indicates a problem with the brake cables, linkage, or rear brake components. In some cases, it may be due to worn brake shoes, pads, or issues with the brake caliper or drum mechanism.
Common causes of a faulty parking brake
- Stretched, seized, or broken parking brake cables
- Worn rear brake pads or shoes
- Faulty parking brake lever or pedal mechanism
- Seized or damaged brake calipers (disc brakes)
- Worn or misadjusted drum brake components
Why do you need to fix this problem quickly?
Without a functioning parking brake, your vehicle may roll away when parked, posing a danger to people, property, and other vehicles. It also means you have no emergency braking backup if the main brake system fails.
How do you know when to get it checked?
You should book an inspection if:
- The parking brake does not hold the vehicle on a slope
- The brake lever or pedal travels too far or feels loose
