Tell me about my AC Re Gas

What is an AC re-gas?

An AC re-gas (also called an air conditioning recharge) is the process of refilling your car’s air conditioning system with refrigerant gas. Over time, refrigerant naturally leaks or evaporates from the system, reducing its ability to cool the cabin. An AC re-gas restores cooling performance so you can stay comfortable while driving.

Why do you need an AC re-gas?

Your car’s air conditioning system relies on refrigerant to absorb heat and deliver cold air through the vents. Without enough gas, the system will struggle to cool effectively, use more fuel, and may put extra strain on the compressor. Regular re-gassing keeps your AC efficient, reliable, and ready for hot New Zealand summers.

Common signs your AC needs a re-gas

  • Air conditioning not blowing as cold as it used to
  • AC takes longer to cool the cabin
  • Windows take longer to demist in winter
  • Unusual noises when the AC is running
  • A faint musty smell from the vents (caused by moisture build-up)

If your AC isn’t cooling properly, it may simply need a refrigerant top-up to restore performance.

What happens during an AC re-gas?

A mechanic connects your car to an AC service machine that removes any remaining refrigerant, vacuum-tests the system for leaks, and then recharges it with fresh gas and lubricant. The system is checked for correct pressures and tested to ensure cold air is blowing consistently from the vents.

How much does an AC re-gas cost?

In New Zealand, an AC re-gas typically costs between $180 and $280, depending on the vehicle’s make, model, and the type of refrigerant used. If leaks or faults are detected during the service, additional repairs may be required before re-gassing can be completed. You’ll receive a clear quote before any extra work is carried out.

Is it safe to drive if your AC needs re-gassing?

Yes, your car will still drive normally, but you won’t have effective air conditioning. This can make summer driving uncomfortable and may affect visibility in winter if the AC can’t help demist your windows. Driving with low refrigerant can also increase wear on the compressor. Regular re-gassing keeps your AC system efficient and prevents costly repairs.
