Tell me about my Alternator Replacement

What is an alternator?

The alternator is responsible for generating electricity while your engine is running. It powers your car’s electrical systems — including lights, wipers, air conditioning, and infotainment — while also charging the battery. Without a working alternator, the battery will quickly go flat and your car will not run properly.

Why do you need an alternator?

An alternator is essential to keep your car’s electrical system functioning. A failing alternator can cause flickering lights, electrical malfunctions, or even a breakdown. Replacing a faulty alternator ensures your battery stays charged and all of your vehicle’s electronics work reliably.

Common signs your alternator needs replacing

  • Battery warning light illuminated on the dashboard
  • Dim or flickering headlights
  • Car struggling to start or stalling unexpectedly
  • Electrical accessories (radio, windows, AC) not working properly
  • Whining or grinding noises from the engine bay

If you notice these symptoms, it’s important to have the alternator checked before it fails completely.

What happens during an alternator replacement?

A mechanic will disconnect the battery, remove the faulty alternator and belt, and fit a new alternator matched to your vehicle. The drive belt is inspected or replaced if necessary. Once installed, the charging system is tested to confirm that the battery is charging correctly and all electrical systems are functioning as they should.

How much does an alternator replacement cost?

In New Zealand, alternator replacement typically costs between $450 and $900, depending on the make and model of the vehicle. European or premium vehicles may be higher due to more complex systems. Costs include the new alternator, labour, and testing. You’ll always receive an upfront quote before any repair work begins.

Is it safe to drive with a faulty alternator?

No. A failing alternator will eventually stop charging the battery, leaving you stranded when the vehicle runs out of power. Driving with a faulty alternator can also cause other electrical issues. If you suspect alternator problems, it’s best to arrange a replacement as soon as possible.
