Tell me about my Ball Joint Replacement

What is a ball joint?

The ball joint is a key part of your car’s suspension system. It connects the control arm to the steering knuckle, allowing smooth movement of the suspension while keeping the wheels aligned. Ball joints act like pivots, enabling the suspension to move up and down and the wheels to steer left and right.

Why do you need a ball joint?

Ball joints are critical for safe steering and suspension performance. If a ball joint is worn or loose, it can affect wheel alignment, cause uneven tyre wear, and reduce steering control. A failed ball joint can even cause the wheel to collapse, making it extremely unsafe to drive.

Common signs your ball joint needs replacing

  • Clunking or knocking noises from the suspension
  • Excessive vibration in the steering wheel
  • Uneven or rapid tyre wear
  • Steering feels loose or wandering on the road
  • Visible movement when inspecting the joint

If you notice these signs, it’s best to have your ball joints inspected before they fail completely.

What happens during a ball joint replacement?

A mechanic will raise the vehicle, remove the wheel, and disconnect the worn ball joint from the suspension assembly. The old joint is pressed out or unbolted, and a new one is installed. The suspension and steering components are reassembled, and the vehicle is road-tested. A wheel alignment is usually recommended after ball joint replacement.

How much does a ball joint replacement cost?

In New Zealand, replacing a ball joint typically costs between $280 and $500 per joint, depending on the vehicle’s make and model. Some vehicles have ball joints built into the control arm, which can increase the cost. A wheel alignment (around $90–$120) is often required after the repair. You’ll always receive an upfront quote before any work begins.

Is it safe to drive with a faulty ball joint?

No. Driving with a worn or broken ball joint is very unsafe. A severely damaged ball joint can cause a complete loss of steering control if it fails while driving. If you suspect a ball joint issue, it’s important to have it inspected and replaced immediately.
