Tell me about my Battery is dead / flat assessment

A flat or dead battery is one of the most common reasons a car won’t start. Your car battery provides the electrical current needed to power the starter motor, ignition system and electronics when you turn the key or push the start button. If the battery has lost charge, you’ll usually be left with little more than a clicking noise or no response at all when you try to start the engine.

What causes a car battery to go flat?

There are several reasons why your battery may go dead:

  • Leaving lights, radio, or accessories on while the engine is off
  • A faulty alternator that isn’t charging the battery properly
  • Old age – most car batteries last 3 to 5 years
  • Loose or corroded battery terminals
  • Extreme cold or hot weather reducing battery performance
  • Parasitic drains from faulty electrical components

Why do you need to fix a flat battery quickly?

Without a working battery, your car won’t start, leaving you stranded. A failing battery can also damage the alternator or starter motor, as they have to work harder when the battery isn’t holding charge. Getting the issue checked early can save money and prevent breakdowns.

How do you know if your battery is flat?

Common symptoms of a dead battery include:

  • No engine crank or a rapid clicking sound when turning the key
  • Dim or flickering headlights and interior lights
  • Electrical accessories not working (radio, power windows, etc.)
  • A battery warning light on the dashboard

What happens during a battery assessment?

A mechanic will:

  1. Inspect the battery terminals and cables for corrosion or looseness
  2. Test the battery’s voltage and charge capacity
  3. Check the alternator and charging system to confirm it’s not the issue
  4. Advise whether the battery needs recharging, repair, or replacement

How much does it cost to fix?

Jump-starting a flat battery is often free if you have roadside assistance, while a replacement battery typically costs between $180–$400 depending on the vehicle type and size. Premium or stop–start batteries can be more expensive.

Is it unsafe to drive with a failing battery?

Yes. Even if you get the car started, a weak battery can cause your vehicle to stall if the alternator can’t keep up. This may leave you stranded in unsafe situations. It’s best to have the battery tested and replaced if needed.
