Tell me about my Brake light is not working assessment

If your brake light is not working, it means other drivers cannot see when you’re slowing down or stopping. This creates a serious safety risk and is also a legal requirement – faulty brake lights can lead to fines or a failed Warrant of Fitness (WOF) inspection. The cause may be as simple as a blown bulb, or it could be an issue with wiring, fuses, or the brake light switch.

What does it mean if your brake light isn’t working?

A non-functioning brake light means that the signal to illuminate when you press the brake pedal is not reaching the bulb or LED unit. This could be caused by a failed bulb, a faulty switch, wiring issues, or electrical problems in the system.

Why do you need to fix a brake light quickly?

Brake lights are one of the most important safety features on your vehicle. Without them, other drivers may not realise you are stopping, greatly increasing the chance of a rear-end collision. It is also a legal requirement to have working brake lights at all times.

Common causes of a brake light not working

  • Blown or burnt-out brake light bulb
  • Faulty brake light switch at the brake pedal
  • Blown fuse in the brake light circuit
  • Damaged or corroded wiring or connectors
  • Failed LED unit (in vehicles with LED lights)

What happens during a brake light assessment?

A mechanic will:

  1. Check if the bulb or LED unit is faulty
  2. Inspect the fuse and wiring for damage
  3. Test the brake light switch for proper operation
  4. Replace the faulty component (bulb, switch, fuse, or wiring)
  5. Test the lights to confirm they are working correctly

How much does it cost to fix?

The cost depends on the cause. Replacing a simple bulb may cost $20–$60, while replacing a brake light switch or repairing wiring could cost $150–$400. LED light unit replacements may be more expensive.

Is it unsafe to drive with a brake light not working?

Yes. Driving with a faulty brake light is dangerous because other drivers may not see when you’re slowing or stopping. It also risks fines and WOF test failure. If your brake light isn’t working, it should be repaired immediately.
