Tell me about my Brake Shoe Replacement
Brake shoes are a key part of drum brake systems, typically found on the rear wheels of many vehicles. They press against the inside of the brake drum to create friction and slow the car. Over time, brake shoes wear down and need replacing to maintain safe and effective braking.
What are brake shoes?
Brake shoes are curved friction components that sit inside the brake drum. When you press the brake pedal, hydraulic pressure pushes the shoes outward against the inside of the drum, creating the friction needed to stop the wheel from turning.
Why do you need brake shoes?
Brake shoes are essential in vehicles with drum brakes, providing the stopping force needed at the rear wheels. If they are worn down, contaminated, or damaged, braking performance will suffer, and the vehicle may fail a Warrant of Fitness (WOF) inspection.
How do you know when to replace brake shoes?
Signs your brake shoes may need replacing include:
- Squealing, grinding, or scraping noises when braking
- Handbrake not holding the vehicle properly
- Poor braking performance or longer stopping distances
- Brake warning light illuminated on the dashboard
- Visible wear if the drum is removed for inspection
What happens during a brake shoe replacement?
A mechanic will:
- Lift the vehicle and remove the rear wheels and brake drums
- Inspect the brake shoes for wear and damage
- Replace worn or damaged brake shoes with new ones
- Inspect and service related components such as springs and wheel cylinders
- Refit the drums and adjust the shoes for proper clearance
- Test the brakes and handbrake for correct operation
How much does a brake shoe replacement cost?
Replacing brake shoes typically costs between $250–$500 per axle, depending on the vehicle type and whether additional components such as drums or wheel cylinders need servicing.
Is it unsafe to drive with worn brake shoes?
Yes. Driving with worn or damaged brake shoes reduces your braking ability and increases stopping distances. In severe cases, the brakes may fail completely. It is best to have brake shoes replaced as soon as wear is detected.
