Tell me about my Cabin Filter Replacement
The cabin filter (also known as a pollen filter) cleans the air that enters your vehicle’s interior through the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system. Over time, the filter becomes clogged with dust, dirt, pollen, and other debris. Replacing the cabin filter keeps the air inside your car clean, improves airflow, and helps your HVAC system work efficiently.
What is a cabin filter?
A cabin filter is a replaceable air filter that sits in the HVAC system, usually behind the glovebox or under the dashboard. It traps dust, pollen, and pollutants before they enter the cabin, ensuring the air you and your passengers breathe is clean and free of most allergens.
Why do you need a cabin filter?
The cabin filter protects passengers from breathing in harmful particles and keeps the ventilation system free from blockages. Without a clean cabin filter, the air inside your vehicle may become dusty, musty, or polluted. A clogged filter can also strain the fan motor and reduce heating or cooling performance.
How do you know when to replace a cabin filter?
Signs that your cabin filter needs replacing include:
- Reduced airflow from air vents
- Musty or unpleasant smells inside the cabin
- Increased dust on dashboard and interior surfaces
- Allergy symptoms when driving
- Air conditioning or heating performance feels weak
What happens during a cabin filter replacement?
A mechanic will:
- Locate the cabin filter housing, usually behind the glovebox or under the dashboard
- Remove the old, clogged filter
- Clean the filter housing if needed
- Install a new cabin filter of the correct type
- Test the ventilation system to confirm airflow improvement
How much does a cabin filter replacement cost?
Cabin filter replacements are usually inexpensive, typically costing between $60–$120, depending on the vehicle and filter type (standard vs. carbon-activated filters).
Is it unsafe to drive with a clogged cabin filter?
While not directly unsafe like brake or engine faults, a dirty cabin filter reduces air quality inside the car and can make driving uncomfortable, especially for people with allergies or asthma. It can also put strain on the HVAC system over time. Replacing it regularly (every 15,000–30,000 km) is recommended.
