Tell me about my Camshaft Position Sensor Replacement
The camshaft position sensor monitors the position and speed of the camshaft, sending this information to the engine control unit (ECU). This helps the ECU optimise fuel injection and ignition timing. If the sensor fails, the engine may run poorly, misfire, or fail to start. Replacing a faulty camshaft position sensor restores smooth engine performance and efficiency.
What is a camshaft position sensor?
The camshaft position sensor is an electronic device that tracks the rotation of the camshaft. It works with the crankshaft position sensor to ensure the engine’s timing is correct, so fuel is injected and spark plugs fire at the right moment.
Why do you need a camshaft position sensor?
Without an accurate signal from the camshaft sensor, the ECU cannot correctly control fuel delivery and ignition timing. This leads to poor performance, reduced fuel economy, and in some cases the engine may not run at all. A working sensor is critical for modern engines.
How do you know when to replace a camshaft position sensor?
Signs of a failing sensor include:
- Check Engine Light illuminated on the dashboard
- Engine misfires or runs roughly
- Poor acceleration or hesitation
- Difficulty starting the engine or failure to start
- Reduced fuel economy
What happens during a camshaft position sensor replacement?
A mechanic will:
- Confirm the fault using diagnostic scanning tools
- Locate the camshaft position sensor, usually near the camshaft or timing cover
- Disconnect the wiring connector and remove the faulty sensor
- Install a new camshaft position sensor and reconnect the wiring
- Clear any fault codes from the ECU
- Test drive the vehicle to ensure correct performance
How much does a camshaft position sensor replacement cost?
Replacing a camshaft position sensor typically costs between $200–$400, depending on the vehicle’s make and model. Luxury or performance vehicles may cost more due to sensor design and accessibility.
Is it unsafe to drive with a faulty camshaft position sensor?
Yes. While the engine may still run, a faulty sensor can cause stalling, poor performance, and difficulty starting. In some cases, the engine may cut out completely, creating a safety hazard. It should be replaced promptly.
