Tell me about my Catalytic Converter Removal & Replacement
The catalytic converter is a vital part of your car’s exhaust system, designed to reduce harmful emissions and keep your vehicle environmentally friendly. Over time, catalytic converters can become clogged, damaged, or fail completely, leading to poor performance, increased emissions, and even a failed Warrant of Fitness (WOF) inspection. Professional removal and replacement ensures your vehicle runs cleanly and efficiently.
What is a catalytic converter?
A catalytic converter is an emissions-control device installed in your car’s exhaust system. It uses a chemical reaction to convert harmful gases like carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and hydrocarbons into less harmful substances such as carbon dioxide and water vapour before they leave the exhaust.
Why do you need to replace a catalytic converter?
If the catalytic converter becomes clogged or fails, it restricts exhaust flow and reduces engine performance. A damaged converter may also allow harmful emissions to escape and will likely cause your vehicle to fail emissions or WOF tests. In some cases, it can also trigger the Check Engine Light.
Common signs your catalytic converter needs replacement
- Check Engine Light illuminated with emissions-related fault codes
- Poor acceleration or loss of power, especially uphill
- Strong sulphur or “rotten egg” smell from the exhaust
- Excessive exhaust smoke or unusual fumes
- Rattling noise from under the car (loose internal parts)
- Failed WOF or emissions test
What happens during catalytic converter removal & replacement?
A mechanic will:
- Diagnose the exhaust system and confirm catalytic converter failure
- Disconnect the exhaust section containing the converter
- Remove the faulty catalytic converter
- Install a new OEM or approved aftermarket converter
- Reconnect and seal the exhaust system
- Test engine performance and emissions to confirm proper operation
How much does catalytic converter replacement cost?
Replacement costs vary depending on the vehicle make and model. Standard replacements start around $800–$1,200. High-performance or OEM converters can cost $1,500–$3,000+. Labour and emissions testing may add to the total.
Is it safe to drive with a bad catalytic converter?
Driving with a failed or clogged catalytic converter can cause severe performance issues, increased fuel consumption, and higher emissions. In some cases, it can also damage the engine. For safety, performance, and legal compliance, replacement should not be delayed.
