Tell me about my Comprehensive Service
A comprehensive service is the most complete type of scheduled car maintenance, covering all essential checks, fluid replacements, and safety inspections. It goes beyond a standard or interim service to ensure every major system in your vehicle is inspected and maintained. This helps prevent breakdowns, improves performance, and extends the life of your car.
What is a comprehensive service?
A comprehensive service is a full vehicle maintenance package that includes an oil and filter change, top-ups of all fluids, replacement of key service items, and a detailed multi-point inspection. It’s designed to keep your car in peak condition and identify issues before they become costly repairs.
Why do you need a comprehensive service?
Comprehensive servicing ensures your car is safe, reliable, and performing at its best. It helps maintain fuel efficiency, reduces wear and tear, and protects resale value. Many manufacturers also require comprehensive services at set intervals to maintain warranty coverage.
What’s included in a comprehensive service?
- Engine oil and filter replacement
- Air filter and cabin filter replacement
- Spark plug replacement (if required)
- Brake fluid, coolant, and transmission fluid checks or replacement
- Battery and charging system check
- Full brake system inspection (pads, discs, drums, hoses)
- Suspension and steering inspection
- Tyre condition and pressure check
- Lights, wipers, and electrical system test
- Exhaust system inspection
- Road test to confirm vehicle performance
How often do you need a comprehensive service?
Most vehicles require a comprehensive service every 12 months or 15,000–20,000 km, whichever comes first. High-mileage or older cars may benefit from more frequent servicing.
What happens during a comprehensive service?
A mechanic will:
- Drain and replace the engine oil and filter
- Replace other filters and spark plugs as required
- Top up or replace essential fluids
- Perform a detailed inspection of safety-critical components
- Check for leaks, wear, or potential faults
- Road test the vehicle to ensure everything works correctly
How much does a comprehensive service cost?
A comprehensive service typically costs between $350–$650, depending on the vehicle make, model, and required parts. Premium vehicles or those needing additional fluid replacements may cost more.
Is it unsafe to skip a comprehensive service?
Yes. Skipping major services increases the risk of breakdowns, higher fuel consumption, and expensive repairs from undetected problems. Regular comprehensive servicing is essential for long-term reliability and safety.
