Tell me about my CV Boot Replacement

The CV (constant velocity) boot protects the CV joint by keeping grease inside and dirt, water, and debris out. If the boot cracks or splits, grease leaks out and contaminants get in, leading to rapid CV joint wear. Replacing a damaged CV boot early can prevent the need for a much more expensive CV joint or axle replacement.

What is a CV boot replacement?

CV boot replacement involves removing the damaged rubber boot, cleaning the CV joint, reapplying grease, and fitting a new boot securely around the joint. This seals the joint and restores proper protection.

Why do you need a CV boot replacement?

A split or leaking CV boot leaves the CV joint vulnerable to dirt and moisture, causing accelerated wear. If ignored, the joint may fail completely, resulting in loud clicking noises, vibration, or loss of drive.

Common signs you need a CV boot replacement

  • Grease splattered on the inside of wheels or suspension
  • Visible cracks, splits, or tears in the boot
  • Clicking or popping noise when turning (if joint is already worn)
  • Vibration while driving
  • Burning rubber smell from grease leaking onto hot parts

What happens during a CV boot replacement?

A mechanic will:

  1. Inspect the CV boot and joint for damage
  2. Remove the axle or joint to access the boot
  3. Clean and regrease the CV joint if it’s still in good condition
  4. Fit a new boot securely with clamps
  5. Reinstall the axle and torque all components to spec
  6. Test drive to confirm smooth operation

How much does a CV boot replacement cost?

Replacing a single CV boot typically costs $250–$450. If the CV joint is already damaged and requires full axle replacement, the cost can range from $500–$1,200+ depending on the vehicle.

Is it unsafe to drive with a damaged CV boot?

Yes. Once the boot splits, the CV joint can fail within a short time if not repaired. Driving with a failed CV joint can cause loss of power to the wheels and make the car unsafe. The boot should be replaced as soon as possible.
