Tell me about my Drive Belt Replacement

What is a Drive Belt?

Also known as a serpentine belt or V belt, the drive belt transfers power to essential components such as your air conditioning, alternator and power steering while the engine is running. Most vehicles have one or more drive belts depending on the accessories fitted. Each belt is driven by the crankshaft pulley, which creates the rotation needed to power these systems. Because the drive belt also turns the alternator, which charges the battery, it plays a vital role in keeping your engine and electronics operating properly.

Why do you need a Drive Belt?

A drive belt powers all of the critical accessories attached to your engine. Without it, your car’s power steering, alternator, air conditioning and other systems would stop working. That’s why keeping your drive belt in good condition is essential for safe and reliable driving.

Common Signs Your Drive Belt Needs Replacing

Over time, the rubber in a drive belt deteriorates from heat and wear. When this happens, you may notice several drive belt symptoms, including:

  • Loud squeaking or squealing noises from the engine bay
  • Heavy steering or reduced power steering performance
  • Air conditioning not working effectively
  • Battery not charging properly or warning lights on the dash
  • Rising engine temperature due to water pump issues

If you experience any of these signs, it’s best to arrange a drive belt replacement before the belt fails completely.

What Happens During a Drive Belt Replacement?

The drive belt is held in place by tensioners that keep the belt tight. During a replacement, a mechanic will inspect the tensioners for wear or damage, fit a new belt, and ensure it is tensioned correctly to manufacturer specifications. This prevents slippage and ensures all accessories continue running smoothly.

Drive Belt Replacement Cost

The average drive belt replacement cost starts at around $190 for a simple system. If your vehicle has multiple belts, costs can exceed $400. Prices vary depending on your car’s make and model, as different vehicles use different belt types.

If the tensioners also need replacing, this adds to the cost. A drive belt tensioner replacement typically costs over $360, as it requires additional parts and labour.

Is it Safe to Drive with a Broken Drive Belt?

No. Driving with a broken serpentine or drive belt is unsafe. Since the belt powers your power steering, a sudden failure can make the steering very heavy and dangerous. It may also stop your alternator and water pump, leaving you with a flat battery or an overheating engine. If your belt fails, you should not continue driving the vehicle.
