Tell me about my Fan Speed Resistor Replacement
The fan speed resistor (also called a blower motor resistor) controls the different speed settings of your vehicle’s heating and air conditioning fan. If it fails, the fan may only work on one speed (often high), not work at all, or operate inconsistently. Replacing the resistor restores full control of the fan speeds.
What is a fan speed resistor replacement?
This service involves removing the faulty blower motor resistor and installing a new one. The resistor regulates electrical current to the blower motor, allowing different fan speeds for heating and cooling.
Why do you need a fan speed resistor replacement?
Without a working resistor, you may lose the ability to adjust airflow inside the car. This not only reduces comfort but can also affect safety by making it difficult to defog or defrost your windscreen in cold or wet weather.
Common signs you need a fan speed resistor replacement
- Fan only works on one speed setting (usually high)
- Fan does not work at all on certain speed settings
- Airflow is inconsistent or cuts out unexpectedly
- Fan speed control switch feels unresponsive
- Burnt smell or visible damage near the resistor
What happens during a fan speed resistor replacement?
A mechanic will:
- Test the blower motor and resistor function
- Access the resistor, usually located near the blower motor
- Disconnect the wiring and remove the faulty resistor
- Install a new resistor and reconnect the wiring
- Test all fan speed settings for proper operation
How much does a fan speed resistor replacement cost?
Replacing a blower motor resistor typically costs $180–$400, depending on the vehicle. If the blower motor or fan speed switch is also faulty, additional repairs may cost $400–$800+.
Is it unsafe to drive with a bad fan speed resistor?
While the vehicle will still run, it can be unsafe in poor weather conditions. Without full fan control, you may not be able to clear your windscreen properly, which can reduce visibility. Replacement should be carried out as soon as possible.
