Tell me about my Full Coolant Flush
Coolant (antifreeze) circulates through your engine to absorb heat and prevent overheating. Over time, coolant can break down, become contaminated, or lose its effectiveness, leading to corrosion, overheating, or engine damage. A full coolant flush removes old coolant, clears out contaminants, and replaces it with fresh fluid to keep your cooling system working properly.
What is a full coolant flush?
This service involves draining the old coolant, flushing the cooling system to remove rust and debris, and refilling it with fresh coolant that meets your vehicle’s specifications. The system is also bled of air pockets to ensure efficient circulation.
Why do you need a full coolant flush?
Old or contaminated coolant can no longer protect against overheating, corrosion, or freezing. A coolant flush restores the correct balance of antifreeze and water, protecting the engine, radiator, water pump, and heater core from damage.
Common signs you need a full coolant flush
- Engine running hotter than normal
- Rust-coloured, dirty, or sludgy coolant
- Coolant leaks or low coolant levels
- Heater not blowing warm air
- Sweet smell of coolant from under the bonnet
- Coolant warning light illuminated
What happens during a full coolant flush?
A mechanic will:
- Drain the old coolant from the radiator and engine block
- Flush the system with a cleaning solution or fresh water
- Inspect hoses, radiator, and water pump for leaks or wear
- Refill with fresh coolant at the correct mixture
- Bleed air from the system to prevent hot spots
- Test run the engine to ensure proper cooling
How much does a full coolant flush cost?
A full coolant flush typically costs $180–$350, depending on vehicle size and coolant type. If additional repairs are needed (such as hose or radiator replacement), costs may be higher.
Is it unsafe to drive without a coolant flush when needed?
Yes. Old or contaminated coolant can cause overheating, corrosion, and major engine damage. If your coolant is dirty or your engine is running hot, a flush should be carried out promptly.
