Tell me about my Head gasket replacement

The head gasket is a vital seal between the engine block and the cylinder head. It keeps engine oil, coolant, and combustion gases separate while withstanding extreme heat and pressure. If the head gasket fails, it can lead to coolant leaks, oil contamination, overheating, and severe engine damage. Replacing a blown head gasket restores proper engine function and prevents further issues.

What is a head gasket replacement?

This service involves removing the cylinder head, cleaning the mating surfaces, and installing a new head gasket. The mechanic will also inspect the head and block for warping or cracks, and replace head bolts and other gaskets as required.

Why do you need a head gasket replacement?

A blown head gasket disrupts the seal inside the engine, leading to coolant mixing with oil, loss of compression, and overheating. If not repaired quickly, it can cause catastrophic engine failure.

Common signs you need a head gasket replacement

  • White smoke from the exhaust (coolant burning)
  • Overheating engine
  • Milky oil (oil mixed with coolant)
  • Loss of coolant with no visible leaks
  • Engine misfires or rough running
  • Bubbles in the radiator or coolant reservoir

What happens during a head gasket replacement?

A mechanic will:

  1. Disassemble the top of the engine and remove the cylinder head
  2. Inspect the head and block for cracks or warping
  3. Clean all sealing surfaces thoroughly
  4. Install a new head gasket and replace head bolts
  5. Reassemble the engine with fresh gaskets and seals
  6. Refill fluids and test run the engine for leaks and performance

How much does a head gasket replacement cost?

Head gasket replacement is labour-intensive and typically costs $1,500–$3,500+, depending on the vehicle. If the cylinder head needs machining or replacement, costs can increase significantly.

Is it unsafe to drive with a blown head gasket?

Yes. Driving with a blown head gasket can quickly destroy the engine through overheating, oil contamination, or loss of compression. The vehicle should not be driven until repairs are completed.
