Tell me about my Heating not working assessment
If your car’s heating is not working, it can make driving uncomfortable and unsafe in cold weather. The issue is often related to low coolant, a faulty thermostat, a clogged heater core, or problems with the blower motor. An assessment will identify the cause and restore proper cabin heating.
What does it mean if the heating is not working?
When the heating system fails, warm coolant is not properly circulating through the heater core, or airflow is blocked. This can be caused by mechanical faults, electrical issues, or coolant system problems.
Common causes of car heating not working
- Low coolant levels due to leaks
- Faulty thermostat stuck open
- Clogged or leaking heater core
- Failed heater fan motor or resistor
- Blocked heater hoses or coolant passages
- Air trapped in the cooling system
Why do you need to fix this problem quickly?
A faulty heating system not only makes driving uncomfortable but may also indicate cooling system problems that could lead to engine overheating. In addition, poor defrosting ability reduces visibility and driving safety.
How do you know when to get it checked?
You should book an inspection if:
- No warm air comes from the vents even with the heater on
- The cabin only blows cold air
- Windscreen fog does not clear when using the defroster
- You notice coolant leaks or a sweet smell inside the car
- The temperature gauge shows abnormal readings
What happens during an assessment?
A mechanic will:
- Check coolant levels and inspect for leaks
- Test the thermostat for proper function
- Inspect the heater core, hoses, and blower motor
- Check for electrical faults in the fan and controls
- Flush the heater core if clogged
- Test heating performance after repair
How much does it cost to fix?
Minor issues such as thermostat replacement or coolant top-up typically cost $150–$300. Heater core replacement may cost $900–$1,800+, depending on the vehicle.
Is it unsafe to drive with no heating?
Yes. While lack of heating may not directly affect the engine, poor defrosting and visibility make driving unsafe in cold or wet conditions. If the cause is low coolant or thermostat issues, it can also lead to overheating and engine damage.
