Tell me about my Horn Replacement
The horn is a critical safety feature that allows you to alert other drivers and pedestrians of your presence. If your horn fails, it reduces your ability to warn others and may cause your vehicle to fail a WOF or safety inspection. Replacing a faulty horn restores proper function and keeps your car road legal.
What is a horn replacement?
This service involves removing the faulty horn unit and installing a new one. Depending on the vehicle, the horn may be located behind the grille, under the bumper, or in the engine bay.
Why do you need a horn replacement?
A working horn is required for road safety and compliance. Without it, you cannot effectively signal in emergencies, increasing the risk of accidents.
Common signs you need a horn replacement
- Horn does not sound when pressed
- Horn sounds weak, muffled, or distorted
- Intermittent horn operation
- Electrical burning smell or blown fuse related to horn circuit
- Failed WOF or inspection due to non-functioning horn
What happens during a horn replacement?
A mechanic will:
- Inspect the horn, wiring, and fuse
- Access the horn unit (may require removing the grille or bumper)
- Disconnect the faulty horn
- Install and connect the new horn unit
- Test the horn for proper function
- Check that the horn button and relay are working correctly
How much does a horn replacement cost?
Horn replacement typically costs $150–$300. If wiring, relays, or the steering wheel horn pad need repair, costs may increase to $300–$600+.
Is it unsafe to drive with a faulty horn?
Yes. Without a working horn, you cannot signal in emergencies, which reduces your ability to avoid accidents. It also makes your vehicle unroadworthy and may cause a failed WOF or inspection.
