Tell me about my Light Out Warning Light is on assessment

If your car’s “Light Out” warning light is on, it means one or more of your exterior lights are not functioning properly. This could be a headlight, tail light, brake light, or indicator. While the vehicle may still be drivable, it reduces your visibility to others and can cause you to fail a WOF or safety inspection.

What does it mean if the Light Out warning light is on?

This warning is triggered by sensors in the vehicle’s lighting system detecting a failed, dim, or malfunctioning bulb. In some modern vehicles, it may also indicate an issue with the wiring or light control module.

Common causes of the Light Out warning light

  • Burnt-out bulb (headlight, brake light, tail light, or indicator)
  • Faulty or loose bulb connection
  • Blown fuse or faulty relay
  • Corroded or damaged wiring
  • Faulty light control module (in newer vehicles)

Why do you need to fix this problem quickly?

Driving with a failed light reduces your visibility and signalling ability, which increases the risk of accidents. It also makes your vehicle non-compliant with road laws and may result in a failed WOF or traffic fine.

How do you know when to get it checked?

You should book an inspection if:

  • The Light Out warning light is illuminated on your dashboard
  • You notice one or more lights not working properly
  • Your indicators flash faster than usual (hyper-flashing)
  • You have intermittent lighting problems
  • Other electrical faults occur alongside the light warning

What happens during an assessment?

A mechanic will:

  1. Identify which exterior light has failed
  2. Check the bulb, fuse, and wiring connections
  3. Replace the faulty bulb or repair damaged wiring
  4. Inspect the light housing for moisture or damage
  5. Test the lighting system to confirm proper operation

How much does it cost to fix?

Replacing a bulb typically costs $50–$120. Fuse or wiring repairs may range from $100–$300+. If a control module is faulty, replacement costs can rise to $500–$1,200+.

Is it unsafe to drive with the Light Out warning light on?

Yes. Driving with non-functioning lights makes your car less visible and prevents proper signalling, which increases accident risk. The issue should be fixed immediately to ensure safety and compliance with road laws.
