Tell me about my Oil / fluid leak assessment

If you notice oil or other fluids leaking from your car, it could indicate a worn seal, damaged gasket, or failing hose. Fluid leaks can reduce lubrication, cooling, or hydraulic pressure, leading to serious engine or system damage. An inspection is needed to identify the source and prevent costly repairs.

What does it mean if your car has an oil or fluid leak?

Oil or fluid leaks occur when seals, gaskets, or hoses fail, allowing vital fluids to escape. Depending on the type of fluid, it may affect the engine, transmission, brakes, cooling, or power steering system.

Common causes of oil or fluid leaks

  • Worn engine gaskets or seals (valve cover, oil pan, crankshaft)
  • Damaged transmission seals or pan gasket
  • Leaking radiator, hoses, or water pump
  • Brake fluid leaks from master cylinder, hoses, or calipers
  • Power steering fluid leaks from pump or lines
  • Loose or damaged oil filter or drain plug

Why do you need to fix this problem quickly?

Ignoring leaks can cause low fluid levels, leading to overheating, poor lubrication, brake failure, or steering issues. Fluid leaks can also damage other components and cause environmental hazards.

How do you know when to get it checked?

You should book an inspection if:

  • You see fluid spots or puddles under your car
  • You notice smoke or burning smells from fluid on hot surfaces
  • Warning lights appear for oil pressure, coolant, or brakes
  • The car struggles to steer, stop, or maintain temperature
  • You frequently need to top up engine oil or coolant

What happens during an assessment?

A mechanic will:

  1. Identify the type of fluid leaking (oil, coolant, brake, transmission, or power steering)
  2. Inspect seals, gaskets, and hoses for wear or cracks
  3. Check fluid levels and system pressure
  4. Clean the area and trace the source of the leak
  5. Recommend seal, gasket, hose, or component replacement

How much does it cost to fix?

Minor leak repairs, such as replacing a gasket or hose, typically cost $150–$400. Larger repairs, such as transmission or engine seal replacement, may cost $600–$2,000+ depending on severity.

Is it unsafe to drive with an oil or fluid leak?

Yes. Driving with fluid leaks can lead to sudden breakdowns, brake failure, overheating, or engine damage. It should be inspected and repaired immediately.
