Tell me about my Oil level is low assessment

If your oil level is low, it means the engine does not have enough lubrication. Engine oil reduces friction, prevents overheating, and protects internal components. Driving with low oil can cause rapid wear or even catastrophic engine damage. An inspection will identify whether the oil is simply overdue for a top-up or if there is a leak or consumption issue.

What does it mean if your oil level is low?

A low oil level usually means the engine is burning oil, leaking oil, or the oil change interval has been exceeded. Engines rely on the correct oil level to function properly, so running low is always a cause for concern.

Common causes of low oil level

  • Oil leaks from gaskets, seals, or the oil pan
  • Burning oil due to worn piston rings or valve seals
  • Extended oil change intervals
  • Faulty oil filter or loose drain plug
  • High mileage engine with natural oil consumption

Why do you need to fix this problem quickly?

Low oil levels can starve the engine of lubrication, causing overheating, knocking, and accelerated wear. If ignored, it may result in engine seizure and costly repairs.

How do you know when to get it checked?

You should book an inspection if:

  • The oil warning light appears on the dashboard
  • Your oil dipstick shows the level below the minimum mark
  • You need to top up oil frequently between services
  • You notice oil spots or puddles under the vehicle
  • You smell burning oil or see smoke from the exhaust

What happens during an assessment?

A mechanic will:

  1. Check the oil level and top up if necessary
  2. Inspect the engine for leaks at gaskets, seals, and oil pan
  3. Check the oil filter and drain plug for leaks
  4. Assess whether the engine is burning oil internally
  5. Recommend repairs or oil system servicing as needed

How much does it cost to fix?

Minor fixes, such as topping up oil, typically cost $40–$80. Leak repairs (gasket or seal replacement) may cost $250–$900+. If the engine is burning oil, major repairs can cost $1,500–$4,000+ depending on severity.

Is it unsafe to drive with low oil?

Yes. Driving with low oil can quickly lead to engine overheating, knocking, or complete engine failure. The oil level should be corrected immediately, and the cause investigated.
