Tell me about my Reduced Power Light is on assessment
If the Reduced Power Light is on, it means your vehicle’s computer has detected a fault that affects the engine or transmission performance. This warning usually puts the car into “limp mode,” limiting speed and acceleration to protect the engine and transmission from further damage. An immediate inspection is recommended.
What does it mean if the Reduced Power Light is on?
This light indicates the vehicle is operating with restricted performance due to a detected fault. It can be triggered by issues with the throttle system, sensors, fuel delivery, or transmission.
Common causes of the Reduced Power Light
- Faulty throttle body or throttle position sensor
- Problems with the accelerator pedal sensor
- Fuel system issues (pump, injectors, or clogged filter)
- Mass airflow (MAF) or oxygen sensor failure
- Transmission faults
- Wiring or communication errors between sensors and the ECU
Why do you need to fix this problem quickly?
Driving in reduced power mode limits your ability to accelerate or drive at highway speeds, creating safety risks. Ignoring the warning may also cause further damage to the engine or transmission.
How do you know when to get it checked?
You should book an inspection if:
- The Reduced Power Light comes on while driving
- Your vehicle accelerates slowly or won’t go above a certain speed
- You experience stalling, hesitation, or jerking
- The Check Engine Light is also illuminated
What happens during an assessment?
A mechanic will:
- Scan the ECU for diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs)
- Inspect throttle body, pedal sensors, and related wiring
- Check the fuel and air intake systems
- Test oxygen and mass airflow sensors
- Inspect transmission operation if related codes are present
- Advise on necessary repairs to restore full performance
How much does it cost to fix?
The cost depends on the underlying issue. Sensor replacements typically cost $200–$500. Throttle body repairs may cost $400–$900. Transmission-related faults can exceed $1,200+.
Is it unsafe to drive with the Reduced Power Light on?
Yes. Reduced acceleration and speed can make it unsafe to merge, overtake, or drive at highway speeds. The car should be inspected and repaired immediately.
