Tell me about my Sway Bar Replacement

The sway bar (also known as an anti-roll bar or stabiliser bar) is a key suspension component that helps reduce body roll and keep your vehicle stable when cornering. It connects the left and right suspension systems, distributing weight evenly to improve handling and safety. If the sway bar is bent, cracked, or broken, it can severely affect stability and steering control. Replacing a damaged sway bar restores safe and balanced handling.

What is a sway bar replacement?

This service involves removing the damaged or worn sway bar and fitting a new one. The mechanic will also inspect and, if needed, replace sway bar links and bushes, which work together with the bar to provide stability.

Why do you need a sway bar replacement?

A faulty sway bar reduces cornering stability, causes excessive body roll, and can lead to uneven tyre wear. It compromises safety during sudden manoeuvres and emergency braking, making replacement essential.

Common signs you need a sway bar replacement

  • Excessive body roll when cornering
  • Clunking or rattling noises when driving over bumps
  • Poor or unstable handling
  • Uneven or rapid tyre wear
  • Visible damage or cracks on the sway bar

What happens during a sway bar replacement?

A mechanic will:

  1. Inspect the sway bar, links, and bushes
  2. Remove the damaged or broken sway bar
  3. Install a new sway bar with fresh mounting hardware
  4. Replace sway bar links and bushes if needed
  5. Torque all fasteners to manufacturer specifications
  6. Test drive the vehicle to confirm improved stability and handling

How much does a sway bar replacement cost?

Replacement typically costs $500–$1,200, depending on the vehicle make, model, and whether front or rear sway bars are replaced. Costs may increase if links and bushes also require replacement.

Is it unsafe to drive with a damaged sway bar?

Yes. A broken or severely worn sway bar significantly reduces stability, especially when cornering or making sudden movements. While the car may still move, handling will be unpredictable and unsafe until the sway bar is replaced.
