Tell me about my Traction Control Light is on assessment

If your traction control light is on, it means the system designed to prevent wheel spin and maintain grip has detected a problem. In some cases, the light comes on briefly when traction control is actively working (such as in wet or slippery conditions). However, if it stays on, it may indicate a fault with sensors, wiring, or the traction control module. An inspection will determine the cause and restore safe operation.

What does it mean if the traction control light stays on?

A solid traction control light usually signals a system fault. Since traction control relies on wheel speed sensors and the ABS system, a problem with these components can disable the system and trigger the light.

Common causes of a traction control warning light

  • Faulty wheel speed sensor
  • ABS system fault
  • Steering angle sensor issue
  • Damaged or corroded wiring/connectors
  • Fault in the traction control module
  • Low tyre pressure or mismatched tyres (less common)

Why do you need to fix this problem quickly?

With traction control disabled, your car is more likely to lose grip during acceleration, especially on wet, icy, or loose surfaces. It also affects stability control, which can increase the risk of skidding or loss of control.

How do you know when to get it checked?

You should book an inspection if:

  • The traction control light stays on continuously
  • The light comes on along with the ABS or Check Engine Light
  • You notice reduced stability or grip on slippery roads
  • There are unusual noises or vibrations while driving

What happens during an assessment?

A mechanic will:

  1. Scan the ECU for traction control and ABS fault codes
  2. Inspect wheel speed sensors and wiring
  3. Check the steering angle sensor calibration
  4. Test the ABS module and traction control system
  5. Advise on sensor replacement, wiring repair, or module replacement if needed

How much does it cost to fix?

Costs vary depending on the fault. Wheel speed sensor replacement typically costs $200–$400. ABS or traction control module repairs can range from $800–$1,800+.

Is it unsafe to drive with the traction control light on?

Yes. While the car will still drive, traction and stability assistance may not function, making it easier to lose control in slippery conditions. The issue should be checked and repaired as soon as possible.
