Tell me about my Traction Control Warning Light is on assessment
If your traction control warning light is on, it means there is a fault in the system designed to help your car maintain grip during acceleration. In normal conditions, the light may briefly flash when traction control is actively limiting wheel spin. However, if it stays illuminated, it usually signals a problem with a sensor, wiring, or the traction control module itself.
What does it mean if the traction control warning light is on?
A constant traction control warning light means the system has been disabled due to a detected fault. Since traction control works closely with ABS and stability control, an issue in any of these areas can trigger the warning.
Common causes of a traction control warning light
- Faulty wheel speed sensor
- ABS system malfunction
- Steering angle sensor fault
- Damaged or corroded wiring/connectors
- Traction control module failure
- Low tyre pressure or mismatched tyres (less common)
Why do you need to fix this problem quickly?
Without traction control, your car is more likely to lose grip during acceleration, especially on slippery roads. Stability control may also be affected, increasing the risk of skidding or loss of control during emergency manoeuvres.
How do you know when to get it checked?
You should book an inspection if:
- The traction control warning light stays on continuously
- Both ABS and traction control lights are illuminated
- You notice reduced grip or stability while driving
- You feel unusual vibrations, noises, or pulling when cornering
What happens during an assessment?
A mechanic will:
- Scan the ECU for traction control and ABS fault codes
- Inspect wheel speed sensors and wiring connections
- Check steering angle sensor calibration
- Test the ABS and traction control modules
- Advise whether a sensor, wiring repair, or module replacement is needed
How much does it cost to fix?
Repair costs depend on the fault. Wheel speed sensor replacement usually costs $200–$400, while traction control or ABS module repairs can range from $800–$1,800+.
Is it unsafe to drive with the traction control warning light on?
Yes. While your car will still run, the safety systems designed to help maintain grip and stability may not function properly. This increases the risk of skidding or loss of control, particularly on wet, icy, or loose surfaces. The issue should be diagnosed and repaired promptly.
