Tell me about my Tyre Rotation
Tyre rotation is the process of moving tyres from one position on the vehicle to another to promote even tread wear. Since tyres wear at different rates depending on their position, rotating them regularly helps extend their lifespan, improves handling, and ensures safer driving.
What is a tyre rotation?
This service involves removing each wheel and repositioning it according to a specific rotation pattern. Common patterns include front-to-rear, cross-rotation, or diagonal, depending on whether your vehicle is front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive, or all-wheel drive.
Why do you need a tyre rotation?
Rotating tyres prevents uneven wear, which can lead to reduced traction, poor handling, and shorter tyre life. It also helps maintain balanced performance across all four tyres, improving safety and fuel efficiency.
Common signs you need a tyre rotation
- Uneven tyre tread wear
- Vibrations while driving
- Pulling to one side
- No record of the last tyre rotation service
What happens during a tyre rotation?
A mechanic will:
- Remove all four wheels
- Inspect tyres for tread depth, wear, and damage
- Rotate tyres according to the correct pattern for your drivetrain
- Refit wheels and torque wheel nuts to specification
- Check tyre pressures and adjust if necessary
How much does a tyre rotation cost?
A tyre rotation typically costs $50–$100. Many workshops bundle it with wheel balancing or alignment for added value.
Is it unsafe to drive without tyre rotation?
Yes. Skipping tyre rotations leads to uneven wear, which reduces grip, increases stopping distances, and can cause premature tyre replacement. Regular rotations (every 8,000–10,000 km) are recommended for safe and efficient driving.
