Tell me about my Wheel Balance

Wheel balancing ensures that the weight of each wheel and tyre is evenly distributed around the axle. If wheels are unbalanced, it can cause vibrations, uneven tyre wear, and extra strain on suspension components. Balancing helps your vehicle drive smoothly, improves tyre life, and enhances safety at higher speeds.

What is a wheel balance?

This service involves mounting each wheel on a balancing machine, which spins the wheel to detect weight imbalances. Small counterweights are then added to the wheel rim to correct the imbalance and restore smooth rotation.

Why do you need a wheel balance?

Unbalanced wheels can make your car feel unstable, cause steering vibrations, and wear out tyres prematurely. Balancing ensures a smoother ride, protects suspension components, and keeps your tyres wearing evenly.

Common signs you need a wheel balance

  • Vibrations in the steering wheel, especially at higher speeds
  • Uneven or patchy tyre wear
  • Excessive road noise
  • Car feels unstable at speed

What happens during a wheel balance?

A mechanic will:

  1. Remove the wheels and mount them on a balancing machine
  2. Spin the wheels to measure any imbalance
  3. Add small weights to the rim at precise locations
  4. Re-spin the wheel to confirm balance correction
  5. Refit wheels and torque nuts to manufacturer specifications

How much does a wheel balance cost?

Wheel balancing typically costs $50–$100 for all four wheels. The service is often included when fitting new tyres or can be combined with a wheel alignment for better results.

Is it unsafe to drive with unbalanced wheels?

Yes. While your car may still drive, unbalanced wheels increase vibration, reduce traction, and accelerate tyre and suspension wear. Over time, this can compromise safety and lead to costly repairs.
