Tell me about my Wiper Motor Replacement

The wiper motor powers your windshield wipers, allowing them to move back and forth to clear rain, snow, and debris from your windscreen. If the motor fails, your wipers may stop working entirely or only work intermittently, creating a major safety risk in poor weather. Replacing a faulty wiper motor restores reliable wiper operation and clear visibility.

What is a wiper motor replacement?

This service involves removing the old or faulty wiper motor and installing a new one. The motor is usually located under the bonnet, connected to the wiper linkage system that moves the arms and blades across the windscreen.

Why do you need a wiper motor replacement?

Without a working motor, the wipers cannot clear the windscreen, leaving you unable to drive safely in rain or snow. Replacement restores safe operation and ensures your vehicle meets road safety and WOF/roadworthiness requirements.

Common signs you need a wiper motor replacement

  • Wipers do not move at all when switched on
  • Wipers move slowly or only on one speed
  • Wipers stop mid-wipe and do not return to rest position
  • Intermittent or inconsistent wiper operation
  • No sound from the motor when the switch is activated

What happens during a wiper motor replacement?

A mechanic will:

  1. Test the electrical circuit, switch, and fuses
  2. Remove the wiper arms and linkage assembly if required
  3. Unbolt and disconnect the faulty motor
  4. Install and connect a new motor
  5. Reassemble the linkage and arms
  6. Test wipers on all speeds to confirm correct operation

How much does a wiper motor replacement cost?

Replacing a wiper motor typically costs $300–$600, depending on the vehicle make, model, and whether additional labour is required to remove the linkage assembly.

Is it unsafe to drive with a faulty wiper motor?

Yes. Driving without working wipers in rain, snow, or road spray is extremely unsafe and illegal in many regions. If your wipers stop working, the vehicle should not be driven until the motor is replaced.
