Tell me about my WOF

A Warrant of Fitness (WOF) is a regular vehicle safety inspection required in New Zealand to ensure your car is roadworthy and safe to drive. A current WOF is mandatory for most light vehicles before they can be legally driven on public roads. It covers essential safety checks but does not involve a full mechanical service.

What is a WOF?

A WOF is a periodic inspection carried out by approved inspectors that checks key safety systems on your car. The inspection ensures your vehicle meets minimum safety standards set by NZTA and can legally be driven on New Zealand roads.

Why do you need a WOF?

Driving without a current WOF is illegal and can result in fines. More importantly, it helps identify safety issues early, keeping you, your passengers, and others on the road safe. A valid WOF is also required for vehicle registration.

What does a WOF inspection check?

  • Tyres (tread depth and condition)
  • Brakes and brake components
  • Steering and suspension
  • Lights, indicators, and reflectors
  • Windscreen, wipers, and washers
  • Doors, seatbelts, and airbags
  • Exhaust and emissions system
  • Rust, structural condition, and safety features

How often do you need a WOF?

The frequency depends on your vehicle’s age:

  • New vehicles: First WOF at 3 years, then every 12 months
  • Vehicles first registered before 2000: Every 6 months
  • Vehicles first registered on or after 2000: Every 12 months

What happens during a WOF inspection?

A certified inspector will:

  1. Examine all key safety systems
  2. Record any items that fail safety standards
  3. Provide a WOF inspection report
  4. Issue a WOF label if the vehicle passes
  5. Explain what needs repairing if the vehicle fails

How much does a WOF cost?

WOF inspections typically cost between $50–$80, depending on the provider and vehicle type. Repairs required to pass are additional.

Is it unsafe to drive without a WOF?

Yes. A lapsed or failed WOF means your car may have safety issues that make it unsafe for you and others on the road. It is also illegal to drive without a current WOF unless you’re going directly to a testing station or repair workshop.
